Tax: SARS owed millions by practitioners, too – Kieswetter

About 4 000 tax practitioners have outstanding tax returns themselves, SARS Commissioner Edward Kieswetter revealed at the SA Tax Institute indaba. According to a Beeld report, Kieswetter said the ‘false narrative that taxpayers are angels’ should be challenged. He said thousands of tax practitioners owed in the region of R600m in unpaid taxes. SARS recently identified 26 000 individuals with cashflows of more than R1m who are not registered for tax. And he warned the number of wealthy individuals flying under the radar is expected to increase tenfold. SARS subjected 1.7m taxpayers to audits in the last financial year and raised additional assessments of R57.2bn through the audits, Kieswetter said.
